18 Weeks

We are at week 18 now and getting closer to finding out the sex of the baby! My next OB appointment is tomorrow where we will get to hear the heartbeat. I will also get weighed which should be interesting as I KNOW I have gained some weight (at least my belly looks like it.) The past couple of visits I had only gained 2 lbs. I have officially been maternity shopping and purchased a couple pairs of maternity pants and I love them! I really think it would be appropriate if we wore maternity pants all of the time!!!

The Rothrock baby is approximately 5 1/2 inches long (about the length of a bell pepper) and weighs almost 7 ounces.

U of L Pre-season Basketball Game

Monday night we were given tickets to a U of L pre-season basketball game, we had a great time, but the reason I am mentioning this is because of the ridiculous food binge we went on. This binge is not because of pregnancy, which would be easy to blame on but rather a string of bad and funny circumstances. We met a couple of people before the game for beers (soda water) then went on to the game, by the time we got to the arena it was 7:30 and I was starving. Corey ordered some sandwich of some sort (Beef De Ville) for me, I looked at it and noticed the immense amount of salt on it but figured I could just wipe it off and all would be ok. Well after trying to scrape off the salt from the top of the bun I took a bite to find that the entire bottom was salt soaked as well. My mouth was covered in salt, like when you are eating a powdered donut. Needless to say I was disgusted. We picked at the meat a bit but I was of course still hungry. We decided to go out to get more food and we ordered a little pizza from Papa Johns. Corey picked up the first piece and took a bite just as I picked up the next piece and discovered a previously chewed piece of mint gum. DISGUSTING!!! We returned the pizza and got a different one, only to look at it and realize we couldn't eat that either. Still starving, I turned around and saw ice cream and said "What the hell?!" I ate my ice cream, Corey found a hot dog and we were pretty much satisfied especially after we ordered popcorn. I can't believe all of the CRAP we ate or tried to eat! We have laughed a lot about this and hopefully you will get a kick out of it too!

Keeneland

Last Saturday Corey and I spent the entire day in Lexington at the Keeneland Race Track. We packed the dogs up, dropped them of at Treats Pet Resort and spent the entire day admiring the horses and betting on them as well. There were 7 live races at Keeneland, and we also watched the Breeder's Cup races on T.V. We had clubhouse tickets thankfully because it was only 50 some degrees all day. I think we ended up even for the day (thanks to the final bet on Curlin) but whose counting???!!!

Sadly George Washington who raced in the final race at Monmouth suffered a broken leg and was put to rest. I hope you are painlessly galloping somewhere with your buddies!

17 Weeks

I meant to do this yesterday...

At 17 weeks the Rothrock baby weighs about 5 oz. now and is around 5 inches long, about the size of a large onion.

Since I've had the below conversation with a few of you, I thought I'd include this tidbit that I got from the "baby center" website:

Why am I so forgetful?

There's no conclusive explanation for why many pregnant women misplace their keys on a daily basis, but a general feeling of forgetfulness during pregnancy can be the result of lack of sleep. "Pregnant women need extra sleep, but it's hard to get," says Margaret Pfeifer, an obstetrician with the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. As your body changes and becomes more uncomfortable, it can disrupt your sleep patterns. Other factors that may contribute to fogginess include hormones, stress, and a preoccupation with all things baby.

2008 Ryder Cup Captains' Celebration

Tonight we are attending the Ryder Cup Captains' Celebration which includes food, cocktails, live music and an interview with captains Paul Azinger and Nick Faldo. This is a fundraiser which will benefit the Louisville Golf Program, Down Syndrome of Louisville, The Children's Hospital Foundation and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana. Tonight's event should be lots of fun, but we are really looking forward to the actual Ryder Cup at the Valhalla Golf Club which will be played September 19th-21st, 2008.

Corey especially has been working very hard at getting tickets for the event. We entered the random ticket draw which closed on September 30th. Winners will be announced by November 1st. We do have a couple of practice round tickets secured along with two tickets for the 19th and are hoping for more through the random ticket draw.

For those of you who have expressed interest in joining us during this event, we look forward to it...I know it's almost a year away, but we all know how time flies.

The Rothrock baby update:

We are at 16 weeks now and our baby is somewhere between 41/3 to 42/3" and weighs about 23/4 oz. This is the week where it is possible to start feeling the baby move inside me...I can't wait!

Riece has arrived!

My newest niece was born last night at 10:30 p.m. Riece weighed 7lbs. 5oz. and was 21" long! Congrats Beth! Congrats Ryah, you'll make a great big sister!

Here are a few pictures. The first is of Ryah helping her mommy have the baby. HE HE!

We can't wait to meet Riece!

BOY or GIRL?!?!

I mentioned earlier that we would find out the sex of our baby on Nov. 1st, but was mistaken!!! We now find out on the 7th! I know it's only 6 days later, but I can barely stand it! I really don't know how people can wait until they give birth to find out! I guess those people have a lot more will power than I do.

Happy Birthday Kathy!!!

Liston's Eye

We ended up taking Liston to the emergency vet last Thursday night/Friday morning around 1:30 a.m. and again on Friday. Her eye took a turn for the worse and we didn't want to risk anything. Instead of healing after the keratectomy Liston's eye became infected and formed a deep corneal ulcer. The vet said she was close to wanting to perform surgery but wanted to try some different eye drops first. We started the new eye drops (5 different types) on Friday and are still going strong. We went for a recheck yesterday and her eye is looking much, much better, but still not healed. At least we are heading in the right direction. We felt so bad for Liston and it was pretty scary for a while. Many of you reading this are dog/pet lovers and understand how emotional and frightening it is when your pet is hurt. Please send some good vibes to Liston's eye!

Needless to say we did not end up going to Lexington. I guess we'll save that adventure for a different weekend!

Do you Want to be Well?

Each week the Pastoral Care Department offers a new devotion for Norton Healthcare employees. This week’s topic is “Do you Want to be Well?” by the Rev. Joel Sturtevant, D.Min., The Reverend Doctor William J. Schultz Community Service Chaplain.

Do you Want to be Well?

The Rev. Joel Sturtevant, D.Min.

The Reverend Doctor William J. Schultz Community Service Chaplain

A former seminary professor, William Hendricks, once suggested that it appears there are three ways to do life these days – as a coper, a chooser or a changer.

Copers have life happen to them. The focus of their lives is to simply cope with what life throws their way. Unable for whatever reason to choose the shape of their lives, they experience life as a given and try to find the best way to respond to it. Although we all have times when we find life hard to cope with, copers do this as a way of life. A coper is often a survivor, and sometimes a victim, with all the frustration that comes with living on someone else’s terms. There is a story in the Gospels (John 5:1-9) that shows Jesus encountering a physically disabled man at a fountain in Jerusalem famous for healing the first person who jumped into the pool after the water was stirred up. The man told Jesus he had been waiting 38 years for someone to help him get into the pool. In his mind, he was waiting for someone else to do something for him he did not or could not choose for himself. He was waiting 38 years for someone else to make his life different. Jesus asked him if he wanted to be a chooser: “Do you want to be well?”

A chooser is one who makes choices to shape her own life. If a chooser doesn’t find fulfillment in a job, that person chooses to take night classes in order to move up to another job that is more satisfying, instead of just complaining how much the current job is hated. Choosers find a way to make some choices so that life is more on their terms, rather than simply someone else’s terms. When we make choices, we take actions to shape our own lives that give us a sense of control and well-being. People who make such choices are often responsible, accountable individuals who feel good about themselves. Sometimes things happen to us totally beyond our control and we may feel powerless, but the more choices we can make, even if they are small ones, the stronger we feel.

A changer is one who makes choices to make things better, not just for themselves but for others as well. They are the difference makers. They are the change agents that make life better for all of us. In that same Gospel story, Jesus was the difference maker in that he encouraged the man to take responsibility for himself and brought healing into his life. We become difference makers when we relate to our family and co-workers with compassion, using our creativity and energy to find solutions to problems we all face. Each day, as we encounter family members, co-workers, patients and patients’ family members, we have the opportunity to make someone else’s life a little different. May God bless you as you bless the lives of others.

Which are you?

We're back

We had a great time in NC! Corey along with Mike and 4 other guys had a great time golfing Pinehurst, playing cards and just being guys!!

I spent the weekend preparing to be a mom with Ashley and her two boys. Jackson and Jacob are 9 months old, cute as can be and very happy little boys!

Liston, Laila, Maggie and Millie had a great time too, they ran crazily through the house and somehow with the two little one's it all worked out! Poor Liston did have to go to the vet on Friday morning and she definitely had a corneal ulcer. She was taking a pain pill and eye drops to heal the ulcer but that didn't work, so on Monday I had to take her to an eye specialist. The ulcer changed and was definitely not healing so they had to do the razor scrape procedure (keratectomy) and she has to stay on medication for another week or so! Hopefully this will do the trick, NO cone though!

WEEK 15
We are at week 15 now. Our baby is 4-4 1/2", weighs 1 3/4-2 oz. and is close to the size of a softball. I have been reading the book "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" which is a great resource! I really enjoy the information about the baby on a weekly basis and the book also includes the changes that I am going through on a weekly basis. There are also some fun "dad tips".

I am also reading "The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy", I recommend this book as well, it is a very honest explanation of what a woman goes through with pregnancy from your girlfriend's perspective!
Corey and I talked about going to Lexington this weekend to check out the horse races, maybe some horse farms and possibly the Bourbon Trail. If we go, I'll let you know all about it...except for the Bourbon part of course, we'll have to rely on Corey for that!

2nd Trimester

Yeah, we made it to the 2nd trimester!!! I am just past 14 weeks and am very happy about that. We had a doctor's appointment today which went very well. We didn't have an ultrasound this time but did get to hear the baby's heart beat. The baby (crown to rump) is between 3 1/4 and 4 inches and is about the size of your fist.

On our next visit, which is November 1st, we will be able to find out the baby's sex and we are very excited about that. I originally had strong feelings that it was a girl and Corey had strong feelings that it was a boy. The majority of the Chinese Birth Calendars that I have visited say it's going to be a boy (I'm not relying on these since I've visited a few of these sites and have been told both.) My doctor today said she had a feeling that it was a girl (solely based on the heart beat.) So, WHO KNOWS, but we will find out in 4 weeks!

I've been thinking about starting a new hobby for the past few weeks and made my first steps today in becoming a super knitter! I'll let you know how it goes or I'll let you know who I sent my supplies to!

Ok...keep praying that we have a happy and healthy pregnancy followed by a happy and healthy baby!

Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, It's off to North Carolina we go!

We are packing up and heading to North Carolina for an extended weekend! Corey and I, along with the dogs are heading to Greensboro this afternoon to visit the Hayes family. Corey and Mike are continuing on to Pinehurst for a 4 day men's golf outing with a handful of other guys and I am staying in Greensboro with Ashley, her boys and all the dogs. I am looking forward to spending time with Ash and the boys!

Unfortunately I have to take Liston to the vet tomorrow morning. I think she has another ulcer on her eye that needs to be tended too. I feel so bad for her! This same thing happened to her last year and she had to have her eyeball scraped with a razor and had to wear a cone for a week.

She was quite a trooper, but I hope she doesn't have to deal with that again!

Attention Animal Lovers...Votes are needed!

There is a Florida-based nonprofit organization called "Pet Rescue by Judy", and they need our help!!!

To give you a bit of background information, Judy has been getting "problems" from the county of Winter Springs, and is actively seeking more land and shelter for her rescued dogs and cats. Currently, Judy's land is overflowing with all the wonderful animals she has rescued from abuse and abandonment. Consequently, and because of the love and dedication Judy has shown to Orange County's animal rescue efforts, she has now been nominated to receive a total ABC Extreme Home Makeover... and for the first time ever.... she will receive a KENNEL if she can get YOUR VOTE to appear on this show!!!

Needless to say, the show is VERY interested in helping Judy, and the group is now focused on receiving signatures for the petition to Home Makeover.

Please visit her site and VOTE!!! http://www.petitiononline.com/sep2007/petition-sign.html

**On a personal note, when my friend Stephanie lived in Orlando, she actually fostered a rottweiler-lab mix for Judy. She personally visited her house and saw all the wonderful and kind-hearted services Judy is providing abandoned and abused animals -- and when she left, she was teary-eyed because Judy is an angel for taking on such a huge crisis and dedicating her life AND home to helping animals in need. Please help her. This same woman took a boatload of dogs through the drive-thru of McDonald's and bought her brood of animals hamburgers after a long day of visiting local companies trying to get employees to adopt...

Judy is incredible and loves animals so much. Please sign the petition at the ABC Extreme Home Makeover website. Your e-mail information will remain private and will not be dispersed to 3rd party vendors.

For more information, or if you'd like to donate, please visit Judy's websites:

Thanks for visiting!

My mom, Ryah and Darcy took off this morning back to MN. We had a great visit! We visited the Louisville Zoo, went bowling, shopping and out to eat! We celebrated Ryah's 2nd birthday and we also played around the house a lot with the dogs! Check out the photo album I just added to see the pictures!

Thanks for visiting guys! Come again soon and often!
